Refrigerators aren't silent appliances - they naturally make some operational sounds. However, new, loud, or unusual noises often indicate problems that need attention. Learning to distinguish between normal operation and concerning sounds can help you address issues before they become serious.

Normal Refrigerator Sounds

Before worrying about unusual noises, understand what sounds are normal:

  • Humming: The compressor running creates a steady hum
  • Whooshing: Air circulation from fans
  • Clicking: Occasional clicks when the compressor cycles on/off
  • Water dripping: During defrost cycles, melted ice drains
  • Ice dropping: Ice cubes falling into the bin
  • Gurgling: Refrigerant flowing through the system

Concerning Sounds and Their Causes

Loud Buzzing or Humming

While some humming is normal, excessively loud buzzing may indicate:

  • Compressor struggling due to dirty condenser coils
  • Compressor motor wearing out
  • Water inlet valve problems (especially during ice making)

Clicking (Repeated)

Repetitive clicking, especially at the compressor, often means:

  • Compressor relay failing
  • Start capacitor problems
  • Compressor having difficulty starting

This should be addressed promptly as continued attempts to start can damage the compressor.

Rattling or Vibrating

Common causes include:

  • Refrigerator not level
  • Items on top of or behind the unit vibrating
  • Loose drain pan
  • Compressor mounting hardware loose

Squealing or Grinding

High-pitched sounds often indicate:

  • Evaporator fan motor bearing failure
  • Condenser fan motor issues
  • Ice buildup interfering with fan blades

Hissing or Sizzling

These sounds may mean:

  • Water dripping onto the defrost heater (usually normal during defrost)
  • Refrigerant leak (serious - requires immediate attention)
  • Pressure equalization after the compressor stops (normal)

Popping or Cracking

Usually caused by:

  • Thermal expansion and contraction of plastic parts
  • Ice buildup shifting
  • Defrost cycle beginning or ending

These are typically normal and not cause for concern.

Sub-Zero Specific Sounds

Sub-Zero refrigerators have unique operational characteristics:

  • The dual compressor system may create different sound patterns than single-compressor units
  • The air purification system creates its own soft sounds
  • High-performance fans may be more noticeable during heavy use

When to Call for Service

Schedule a service call if you notice:

  • Any new sound that persists for more than a day
  • Sounds accompanied by temperature problems
  • Grinding or squealing that gets progressively worse
  • Clicking that continues without the compressor starting
  • Hissing combined with a chemical smell

Our technicians are trained to diagnose and repair noise issues on all major brands, ensuring your refrigerator operates quietly and efficiently.
