    Refrigerators, freezers, ice machines and wine storage. Nothing else goes on the van, which is why the gasket, thermistor or fan motor your unit wants is usually already on it.

    Temperatures at both evaporators, current draw at the compressor, defrost cycle timed end to end. A part gets ordered when a reading says so, not when a symptom suggests one.

  • One flat fee to look

    The service call is a single figure covering the visit and the full diagnosis, and it comes off the bill if you approve the repair. There is nothing else added for a callback about the same fault.

  • A straight answer about age

    Some units are worth a compressor and some are not. If yours has reached the point where the repair is the wrong spend, we will say so on the first visit rather than after two parts orders.

The questions that come up before we are even booked

My refrigerator is warm but the freezer is still cold. Is that one fault or two?

Usually one. A Sub-Zero built-in runs two separate refrigeration systems in most designs, but the symptom you are describing more often points at airflow or defrost on one side than at two independent failures. We check the evaporator for frost blockage, the fan for a seized bearing and the defrost heater and thermistor before going anywhere near a sealed-system diagnosis.

The condenser sits behind a grille at the top. Does it really need cleaning?

Yes, and it is the single most useful thing an owner can do. A coil packed with dust makes the compressor run longer and hotter for the same result, which shows up first as a cabinet that drifts a degree or two warm on hot days. A soft brush and a vacuum at the grille, a couple of times a year, prevents a surprising share of the calls we take.

How much is the visit?

A flat service call fee, charged once, covering the trip and the full diagnosis. It is credited in full against the repair if you go ahead. Parts and labour are quoted on top of that before any work begins, and you can decline at that point having paid only the call.

Do you work on the older units, or only the current ones?

Both. Panelled 500 and 600 series columns are still in a lot of kitchens around here and most of what fails on them is serviceable. Where a part is genuinely out of production we will tell you that plainly, along with what the alternatives actually cost you in the long run.

The ice machine stopped after we changed the filter. Related?

Almost always. A new filter carries air, and the fill valve will sit and buzz rather than fill until that air is purged through. Running several litres through the dispenser or the line usually clears it. If production is still down after that, the fault is more likely to be the fill valve or the mould heater than the filter.

No. We are an independent repair shop. We buy factory-approved parts and we work on Sub-Zero equipment daily, but we are not appointed by, endorsed by or authorised by the manufacturer, and anything covered under the manufacturer's own terms should be arranged through them.

Where the van goes

Four places we are in most weeks. The kitchens differ enough that the job differs with them — a column in a 1920s two-family and a column in a house with a service entrance are not the same call.

    West Cambridge and the streets around Harvard Square are dense with Victorians and large frame houses cut into condominiums, so a built-in refrigerator often sits in a kitchen carved out of an older floor plan. Access tends to be by narrow stair and shared hall rather than driveway.

    Arlington is dense — two-families and Colonials off Massachusetts Avenue, with hillside streets climbing toward the Heights. Kitchens are compact and often reworked into a rear ell, which makes clearance around a built-in the first thing worth measuring.

    Low-density zoning and multi-acre lots mean long driveways, side service entrances and kitchens sized to match. Butler's pantries with a second refrigerator or a wine column are common in the newer houses off Boston Post Road.

    Newton Centre and the villages around it are shingled Victorians and 1920s colonials, nearly all with kitchens rebuilt at least once and refrigeration set flush with the cabinets. Tight rear entries and turning basement stairs shape how a column comes out.
