What the new buildings put in
The recent developments here specify integrated refrigeration as a matter of course — an undercounter drawer set in an island, a wine column in the dining end, panel-ready fronts to match the joinery. They are three to eight years old now, which is exactly the age at which the first fan motor or door seal starts to make itself known.
Undercounter units live a harder life than a full-height column: warmer cabinetry, less air, and a condenser that gets whatever the toe-kick grille lets through. When one of them drifts, the grille and the coil behind it are the first thing we look at, and often the last.
